Talia (my magnificent wife) and I recently started watching this new show on HBO called “Sharp Objects”. The drama/thriller features Amy Adams playing an exhilarating role as a news reporter trying to solve a murder in a small town, while battling her own struggle with depression and childhood trauma. Her character seems to be moving through life on a soundtrack, with very few highs and very excessive lows.
Much of these moments have caught my attention not JUST for Amy Adams’ acting ability (although I believe she is one of the most convincing actors currently roaming around Hollywood). In a rare occurrence, “Sharp Objects” director, Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers’ Club and Big Little Lies), convinces the surviving members of Led Zeppelin to allow him to feature many of their songs during sequences both dark and light...And it rocks!
Vallée employs less-mainstream tracks such as “In The Light” to thrust his audience into a dark trance. The usage of this musical imagery has inspired me to re-listen to a lot of the music I grew up loving and to some of the Led Zeppelin catalog that I typically forego. After much thought and years of analysis, I believe that I am finally ready to answer the age-old question, “What is your favorite Led Zeppelin song?”. But of course, in typical fashion, I couldn’t just blurt out the answer and call it a day. The biggest and loudest rock band of all time deserves more.
Over the next several weeks, I will publish my personal Top 25 Led Zeppelin songs in descending order. When this is all said and done, many of you will disagree and many will applaud. Music isn’t meant to be ranked or judged from “best to worst” the way debates about athletes occur. That is NOT what I plan on doing.
.This is a display of passionate listening to a band that sculpted my music mind forever. I bring to you my personal favorites and why I think you should give them a listen as well. Check in every Tuesday and Thursday over the next few weeks to find out which songs took the top spots! Leave your comments and critiques as well - I always love a good debate.
